Speaker distance behind acoustically transparent screen

Postby Bob » Sat Apr 08, 2006 6:06 pm

In this thread AVS Forum: Sandmans Open Weave Vinyl Screen Project begins a home theatre builder named SandmanX has been doing a number of video quality tests on a series of lower cost materials available in 98" by yards sizes. Most of that thread deals with video quality.

My question is, how far behind the screen (aka grill cloth) should the speaker be placed?
And what are the rules of thumb in effects (physics-ish).
I've seen recommendations from 1" to 12"

Some links about the cloth itself:

This is the only test that SandmanX did himself

A link about some tests that someone else did on different materials, near the end of this thread are some tests showing the effects of speaker distance:

You can try this acoustic transparent fabric The acoustic panel material (substrate) rather than fabric absorbing sound. The function of the noise reducing fabric is looking great and allows the sound to pass through the acoustic substrate.
