New Song "I Live For You"

Postby Howler » Tue May 04, 2004 4:40 pm

Well... at the risk of it all... here's a new one...*whimper*... been working on it for almost 2 years off and on, rewrote it twice, redid the drums three times, recut all the guitars many times, and finally am getting some time in the new studio to diddle with it. I know, Scott, you want more dobro.. :-) And Ido, I know you'll want thicker guitar sounds... *sigh*

Wrote it for Trish and she likes it, so I guess that's enough, but as always, I'm looking for constructive criticism on mix, sound, separation, etc. It started off with the working title "You've Been Lyin' To Me", but I just couldn't get into the negativity, so it evolved into this.

Take the the phasey wash off the guitar - make the lead more distinct ala classic Gilmore / Pink Floyd - long sustain, seamless echo - and add an organ behind it [a Merle Saunders style Hammond ?].

Also add a spoken part that explains why you live for her... would die for her.

I'm probably being stupid but I can't see the song listed. There are four tracks: The Price Of Love, Too Much Seconal, Baby Ruth and Mighty Field....

Have I missed a link somewhere?

Sorry - just me, missed the link to your homepage.

Couple of comments: way too much cymbal work during the guitar solo. Every 8 bars you find yourself bracing for another cymbal avalanche.

Guitar solo needs to cut more - drier, much drier and dirtier and it should not be competing with the stabbed guitar chords.

The lead guitar at 2' 44" plays four repeated notes before a downwards run. Make more of those four notes! Its a brilliant air-guitar moment! You need to make that entry say here comes the guitar and I mean it! Not sure about adding an organ though. I think with the right grit in the guitar, it doesn't need backing and you'll still get your audience holding up their lighters at the end.

Bloody good song really!! :)

Excuse me while I listen to some more...

Um... there's a hammond all through the track... but it only really shows up at lulls. I wanted that organ to be a feel rather than a heavy part. I firmly believe the lyrics distinctly describe why I live for her.

I hear you about the guitar being drier. Unfortunately, I did a regular no-no and cut that track through a modeling amp with the effects on it. Duh. And I like the feel of the lead so much I'm almost scared to try to recut it.

I sort of agree on the cymbals. I recut all the drums except the cymbals, and I think I originally made up for the lack of a good syncopated kick/snare pattern with cymbals on the original track. later, when the kick/snare wre recut, it made the cymbals too busy. I'll take a close look at that.

BTW... that lead style came directly from hearing and watching Neal Schann (sp?) from Journey. After my hand accident, I couldn't play my old style leads, so I gave it up for 15 years. After seeing him use a tremelo bar for reverse bends, I suddenly saw a way to play limited leads with feel, and fell right into the style used on this track. It's a fun, psychedelic way to play guitar.

Thx, all for your comments.

I like all types of music, but my favorite is Hip Hop Music. The note and tone paints a picture of every emotion every felt. In the music industry it is often said that a musician/singer, no matter how talented hasn't really played or sang their best until they have been through something. The listener knows when that has happened because it can be felt with every note played or sung.
