Hello all

I have found a wall system that a local company has developed for low cost
prefabricated housing. Its made up of 4" of expanded foam insulation sandwiched
between sheet metal.(just like steel security doors) Its fits together with a
tongue and groove held by screws, and it is self supporting so it doesn't need
any studs. The sheetrock then just screws to the walls with regular ole'
drywall screws. If I used these, it would be for the rooms within the existing
structure. Unfortunately they don't have any stc data so using them would be
just a guess. Has anyone heard of such a thing? I know of some second hand info
about a studio constructed of refrigeration panels (don't know if its the same
thing or not) that wasn't very successful. It seems like it should work, but I
just don't know. What do you think?

Thanks for your input

I'd be somewhat leery of this. My basis for this is my studio door
construction is similar. I started with an insulated steel door just as
these panels seem to be. I then added a layer of 3/4" MDF and then another
layer of 1/2" drywall on top of that. The door is well sealed using rubber
stripping. Even with all of this it is still the weak link in my room for
outside noise penetration. I think I am going to have to build a 'dog
house' on the outside and put in a second door. I would opt for more
traditional wall techniques but...I've been wrong before!

Sorry- that may be just my terminology or I picked it up somewhere from some
construction pals. I am going to need to build a frame out from where the
current door is now to hold the second or 'outside' door. Most likely in my
case it would only be the width of some basic framing but you could extend
it further as to have a sound lock where one door would always be closed if
opening the other. Sometimes these are peaked (don't have to be) and look
like large/tall dog houses.
