Subject: Audiophile Room Tune Question
I am a audiophile who is just getting back into the insanity after a 20 year
absence. I recently experienced the benefits of room treatments.
As an experiment, I took one of those corrugated (?) foam mattress pads
(single bed size) and hung on the wall behind my stereo system. It really
seemed to help the imaging. So I figure I'm gonna try and DIY something
with a frame and covered with fabric. It will probably be freestanding and
portable, ie. capable of being folded in half and taken out of the living
room (to keep the wife from filing for divorce).
I have a small (12k) PDF file that shows my current setup and the acoustical
nightmare I call a living room and by the way, yes I know the location of
the stereo is not ideal. Unfortunately, it is my only option in this house.
You can view the room PDF at: http://www.interlynx.net/webfx/webmaster/room.pdf
My current system is at:

So, my questions are:
1) First of all, my friends all think I am nuts for paying big bucks for
audio equipment. They are gonna think I am even crazier when they see the
room tune. In layman's terms, what is it that I am actually doing to the
room to make it sound better? How would you explain the room tune concept,
specifically what I am planning to do, to someone who is happy listening to
a boom box?
2) Are there any good web sites that have detailed plans for the type of
project I am attempting?
Thanks in advance.
