Which Side Should I Put My TV?

Hi everyone,



I have this room:




I am confused. Where should I put my new Plasma TV? Which side is better regarding the acoustics? I have not much knowledge about acoustic design. So which side would you prefer? A or B? Please help! Thank you!

Your question is meaningless unless you tell us:
1) What you are trying to do. Is this a home theater? A video editing suite? Your living room?
2) Where the sound sources are and what directions they are facing. If they are dipole sources (sound comes out in 2 directions, usually front and back, versus typical speakers that are monopole, where sound only comes out the front) you should mention that.
3) Where the listeners are and what direction(s) they are facing.
4) What else is in the room - furniture, etc.

Hey John

First of all, thanks for the answer. So I'm gonna ask that, if you have this room and 50" Plasma Tv and 5.1 Logitech Z-5500 Speakers (not installed), what would you do with them? The room is empty now. I am planning to put a sofa or two according to the layout. There will be some carpets. That's all.

If it is a Home Theater (or just a TV room), I'd tend to put the screen on the shorter wall (B) and have the increased ceiling height over the viewers. If it is something more ambitious, you'll need to provide more detail...

I was thinking in the ceiling. An oubliette -- with entertainment!

the oubliette was below ground level and the trap door was at the top of the high, beehive cylindrical shaped ceiling. There were no windows in the oubliette and the only access was from the trap door in the ceiling. Prisoners were lowered into the oubliette from a rope and food and water was sent down by the same method.

If the room is indeed 3.6 m (12 feet) long, and 2.7 m (9 feet) high,
and a 50 inch plasma,
then odds are the couch is going to be closer to the farther wall (at least 2/3 of the room away from the television).

Some sillyness:
If there is no ceiling treatment,
then
if the center chanel is above the plasma then I think the ceiling rear wall reflection is best if the plasma is on the tall wall
if the center chanel is below the plasma then I think the ceiling rear wall reflection is best if the plasma is on the short wall
BUT if the couch is higher than his ears, then it doesn't matter.

With the B wall being shorter, I would think putting the TV on the B wall with the couch near the A wall would be best. Not only because of headroom but also because wouldn't the center channel and front speakers bounce off the slanted ceiling if the TV was on the B wall? As far as whether this room has a door or not, I would vote for a airplane hangar door where the whole wall opens up. That way if you had too many people over, you could expand the theater room to your backyard by opening the hangar door.

I would out it on the A side, to me it looks better.
